Acids, Bases and Neutralization

Introduction

What do you think of when you hear the word "acid"? Most people think of a fuming, corrosive liquid which is very dangerous. However, not all acids are like this. Our favourite potato chips contain acid! Vinegar is also a solution of acid! The sharp, sour taste of vinegar is due to ethanoic acids in it. Citric acid is present in oranges and lemons. These fruits also contain ascorbic acid, which is well known as vitamin C.

Acids and alkalis form an integral part of our daily life and we will learn the chemistry of these important chemicals in this section. The chemistry of concentrated acids is also highlighted in order to stress on the importance of safety precautions in dealing with these chemicals. The application of acidity and alkalinity in our daily life and environment is also considered.

Quantitative aspects of chemistry will be introduced in this section through the study of molarity and neutralization reactions.
